All Schools to Close on 5th and 6th May for Local Government Elections

All Schools to Close on 5th and 6th May

Colombo, April 24 — The Ministry of Education has announced that all government and private schools across Sri Lanka will be closed on the 5th and 6th of May 2025 in view of the upcoming Local Government Elections.

The decision was made following a formal request from the Election Commission, which plans to utilize school premises as polling stations, vote counting centers, and for the distribution and collection of election materials such as ballot boxes.

According to the circular issued by the Ministry, schools identified for election use must be handed over to Grama Niladhari officers by 4th May, fully prepared with essential furniture and facilities. Education directors and school principals have been tasked with ensuring the timely preparation of these venues.

Despite schools resuming regular academic activities on Wednesday, 7th May, authorities have clarified that selected institutions may continue to support the electoral process after school hours if necessary.

This measure is part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process across the island.
